Associate Danielle Reece-Greenhalgh has commented in the Metro about the recent ONS crime statistics, which show that in the year ending June 2019, police recorded rapes increased by 7% as opposed to 21% in the year ending June 2018.
Danielle commented: “An increase to almost 59,000 reported rapes last year provides a stark contrast with the declining number of charges, which fell to 3,034. In recent years, due in part to the prevalence of high-profile cases and the #metoo movement, there has been an exponential increase in victims willing to come forward and report their experiences. This year’s statistics perhaps indicate that this trend is beginning to plateau while the CPS continue in their widely publicised struggle to convert allegations into convictions.”
