Partner Jessica Parker comments on the charging of Bernie Ecclestone with fraud by false representation, after an HMRC investigation found that he had more than £400 million offshore assets concealed.
“The numbers of people charged with tax fraud has dwindled over the years from a peak of around 1,000 decisions to charge per year between 2014-2019, plummeting to a low of 304 last year. Seen in this light, the decision to put such a high profile case to the CPS demonstrates that the HMRC are keen for the public to know that they have not lost their appetite to take cases to the criminal courts.”
