Partner Maia Cohen-Lask, was quoted in City AM, Solicitors Journal, and Law360 UK as Tom Hayes’ LIBOR appeal opened at the Supreme Court this week.
A former UBS and Citigroup trader, Tom Hayes, was sentenced in 2015 to 11 years in prison after he was found guilty of conspiring to rig the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR). The case is being heard alongside former Barclays trader Carlo Palombo’s appeal against his 2019 conviction for rigging the Euro Interbank Offered Rate (EURIBOR). The Court of Appeal dismissed both former traders’ respective appeals against their convictions in March 2024.
Maia noted that a point of particular interest is the conflict between the approach taken in the US and UK. However, it is not clear, given the grounds of appeal, whether this will be ventilated in the Supreme Court, having been side-stepped in the Court of Appeal.
