Partner Maia Cohen-Lask has been quoted in the media on Eugene Shvidler’s failure to overturn his sanctions designation, following today’s highly anticipated Supreme Court judgment.
Soviet-born oil tycoon Shvidler has had his UK-based assets frozen and movements restricted since March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Supreme Court upheld the lower courts’ refusal not to revoke his designation finding, by a majority, that the designation was a lawful and proportionate measure.
Maia, who is quoted by Reuters, Spear’s and ICLG, calls the judgment “a huge blow not just for Mr Shvidler but for any person who has been sanctioned despite their lack of any links to the Putin regime.”
