Partner Edward Grange has been quoted in the Financial Times after the UK Supreme Court quashed the extradition of trader Joseph El-Khouri to the US.
A dual British and Lebanese national, El-Khouri faced charges in a New York court that he made $2 million from allegedly betting on insider trading. The UK government had previously ordered his extradition to the US, following a lower court ruling.
In today’s judgment, the Supreme Court blocked El-Khouri’s removal as the alleged criminality occurred outside the US.
The court’s ruling will “send shockwaves through the Department of Justice” in Washington, Edward says. It would also lead to other cases before the UK courts “having to be reconsidered where the extradition request consists of conduct physically occurring outside the US”, he concludes.
